Fitted Wardrobes in Ascot

The Brief

A master bedroom in Ascot had a deep alcove that was supposed to hold two freestanding wardrobes. In practice, the wardrobes didn't fill the space. There was a six-inch gap at the top, daylight showing down one side, and a wasted triangle in the corner that ate floor space and collected dust. The owners had been putting up with it for years and had finally had enough. They wanted a wall-to-wall run of fitted wardrobes that used every inch of the alcove, with internal drawers, hanging space, and a finish that could be painted to match the rest of the room.

What We Did

Josh visited the house and measured the alcove properly, including the slight wall taper at one end that had confused the previous freestanding wardrobes. Design options were talked through on the spot. Once the layout, material, and finish were agreed, the work was scheduled in:

• Site visit and measurements: Full measure-up of the alcove including the out-of-square corner, ceiling height, and the skirting profile that needed to be worked around.
• Design discussion: Owners wanted three full-height doors, two hanging rails, four internal drawers, and a top shelf for storage. Josh drew up a simple layout on the spot so they could see what it would look like.
• Materials and build-up: Smooth MDF throughout, 18mm carcasses, 22mm fronts. Chosen because it paints up cleanly and doesn't show the grain once finished. Soft-close hinges and drawer runners on everything that moves.
• Frame and carcass install: Built the carcasses on site, fitted them into the alcove, and scribed the end panels tight to the walls. No gaps, no fillers, no "we'll sort it with silicone" tricks. The joins are clean because the scribing was done properly.
• Doors, shelves and drawers: Hung the three full-height doors with an even reveal top to bottom, fitted the internal shelves and hanging rails, and installed the four drawer boxes on soft-close runners.
• Final dress: Adjusted every door and drawer until the reveals were consistent, filled and sanded the visible fixing points, and cleaned the room before handover. Left the unit ready for the owners' decorator to paint.

The Result

A run of fitted wardrobes that actually uses the whole alcove, with proper hanging space, drawers that don't stick, and a finish that looks like it was always meant to be there. The owners now have storage they use every day and a bedroom that finally feels finished. Total time on site: three days.
